Why is that when we go to a higher altitude the temperature decreases, though we are going closer to the sun?

The temperature has a reverse relationship with altitude. As we go upwards, the temperature goes lessens. This is because the green house gases which keep the earth warm are heavier and they settle closer to the earth than the other gases.
