Why is the actual distance on the ground to be reduced on the map?

Open in App
Solution

Instructions:
  • Explain the reason
  • Brief note on scaling
  • Give an example
Solution:
Reason:
The actual distance between two places is either represented in kilometres or meters. If we must represent the actual distance, we need a map having a length in kilometres or meters, this is not practicable. To tackle this scenario, we use the method of scaling. In this method, we represent the actual length between the places in centimetres. And each centimeter will represent a specific length in kilometres or meters in the actual scenario.

Example:
  • Actual distance between Bangalore and Jaipur is around 2100 km.
  • Distance between Bangalore and Jaipur on the map is around 21 cm.
  • Which means 21 cm in the map= 2100 km in real.
