Question

Why is the edge of a cutting instrument sharpened?

Open in App
Solution

  1. We know that pressure is inversely proportional to the area of contact.
  2. When we sharpen the edge of a knife, we are actually making the area of contact lesser, so that more pressure is exerted on the item which needs to be cut using the knife.
  3. This will ultimately help in cutting the item smoothly, without much effort.
