Question

Why is the extraction of copper from pyrites more difficult than that from its oxide ore through reduction?

Open in App
Solution

The standard free energy of formation (ΔfG0) of Cu2S is lesser than those of CS2 and H2S. So, CuS2 (pyrites) can not be reduced by carbon or hydrogen.

2Cu2S+C4Cu+CS2

2Cu2S+H22Cu+H2S

However, the ΔfG0 of copper oxide is greater than that of CO2.

Therefore, the sulphide ore is first converted to the oxide by roasting and then reduced.

2Cu2S+3O2Roasting−−−−−−−−−2Cu2O+SO2

2Cu2O+Cheating−−−−−−−−4Cu+CO2
