Question

Why is the gas with higher critical temperature easily adsorbed on activated alumina?

Open in App
Solution

The amount of gas adsorbed by a solid depends on the nature of gas. Easily liquefiable gases (i.e. with higher critical temperature) are readily absorbed. Thus 1g of activated charcoal adsorbs more sulfur dioxide (critical temperature 630K) than methane (critical temperature 190K).
