Question

Why is the HOH bond angle in H2O smaller than HNH bond angle in NH3?

Open in App
Solution

According to VSEPR theory, H2O has 2 lone pairs of electrons whereas NH3 has only one lone pair.
Hence, repulsive forces between lone pair and bond pair is more in H2O. Which results in bond angle of 1040 degrees in H2O and 1020 in NH3.
