Question

Why is the hydrometer for heavier liquids not suitable for measuring the density of lighter liquids?

Solution

There is no denying the fact that a hydrometer for heavier liquids is not suitable for measuring the density of lighter liquids. The reason for the same can be discussed below:

  1. A hydrometer is a device used to measure the relative density of liquids.
  2. A hydrometer for heavier liquids cannot record small changes in the density of the lighter liquid.
  3. A hydrometer for heavier liquids is marked between 1 to 1.7.
  4. A hydrometer for heavier liquids is the least sensitive.
  5. A hydrometer for heavier liquids cannot detect the adulteration of lighter liquids such as milk.
  6. For detecting the small changes in the density of a lighter liquid, a hydrometer must be highly sensitive which is not possible in the case of a hydrometer for heavier liquids.
