Why is the large intestine larger in diameter than small intestine?

Large intestine is larger in diameter than small intestine because most of the absorption of food and digestion of food occurs in the small intestine while in the large intestine only water and some salts are absorbed. Hence, larger surface area is needed to absorb more water.
