Question

Why is the latent heat of fusion of a substance always less than its latent heat of vaporisation?

Open in App
Solution

More energy is required to separate the liquid molecules to convert the liquid into gaseous state (vaporisation process) than to bring the liquid molecules together (fusion process) to form a solid. Hence latent heat of fusion of a substance is always less than its latent heat of vaporisation.
