Question

Why is median useful?

Solution

Median:

  • Median is a measure of the central tendency of a set of data.
  • It is the central value of a data set when the elements are arranged in ascending or descending order.
  • For an odd data set, the median is the value of the element in the middle.
  • For an even data set, the median is the mean of the two central values.
  • A median is not affected by the skewness of the data or the extreme outliers.
  • A median divides the data set into two halves namely upper and lower quartiles.
  • If the mean and median of the data are equal, then the data is distributed evenly.

Median is the middle point in ranked data series. It is used when the distribution is not symmetrical and when the distribution is skewed, the median will better match to the intuitive meaning of “middle”.

Hence, the median is useful to calculate the data.
