Question

Why is the pendulum important?

Open in App
Solution

Pendulum: A simple pendulum is defined as a point mass attached to a massless, inextensible string, which is attached to a rigid support.

The pendulum is important because of the following reasons:

  1. The pendulum is used to measure the effect of gravity because a pendulum moves back toward the mean position by the action of gravitational force.
  2. Since the time period of a pendulum is constant, it can be used to tell the time. A pendulum inside a clock keeps the hands running.
  3. The spinning of the earth can be demonstrated by a pendulum.

These are some of the reasons why a pendulum is important.
