Why is the rate of breathing in women and children faster than in men?

The volume of the lungs of women and children are smaller than that of lungs of men, therefore women and children have a slightly faster breathing rate. It is also because more oxygen is needed and more carbon dioxide needs to be exhaled out of the body.
