Question

Why is the ratio of 2:3 of ammonium chloride and calcium hydroxide taken in lab preparation of ammonia gas

Open in App
Solution

Ammonium chloride , like camphor is sublimable. This means, during reaction, the heat will cause Ammonium chloride to vapourise, and hence, ammonium chloride vapours are formed with ammonia gas.

To prevent this more Calcium hydroxide is used. Calcium hydroxide will absorb excess heat, and prevent sublimation . This prevents loss of ammonium chloride as vapour.
