Question

Why is the second law of thermodynamics not violated by living organisms?

Open in App
Solution

Second law of thermodynamics:

  1. The second law of thermodynamics states that the entropy in an isolated system always increases.
  2. This law states the entropy of a closed system.

Living organisms:

  1. Living organisms can gain or loose energy from the external environment. Therefore, living organisms are open system.
  2. Since living organisms are not closed system, it has no effect on the second law of thermodynamics.

Hence, the second law of thermodynamics is not violated by living organisms.
