Why is the source of Alpha particle kept inside the lead box?

Lead box absorbs most of the beta and gamma particles (having high penetration ability)and a small number of alpha particles, emitted from a radioactive source. By using this property a beam of alpha particles obtains So, the source of the Alpha particles is kept inside the lead box.
