Why is the stem of hydrometer made thin?

Open in App
Solution

  1. A hydrometer is an instrument used to measure the relative density of a liquid.
  2. It usually consists of a glass float with a long thin stem that has markings.
  3. It has a large spherical bulb to increase the buoyancy so that it can float on the surface of the liquid.
  4. As the graduation on the stem is related to the density of the liquid,
  5. And increasing the size of the stem decreases its accuracy.
  6. Therefore it consists of a thin stem as a thin stem increases the sensitivity of the hydrometer.
