Question

Why is the terminal voltage of a cell less than its emf ??

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

The emf of the cell is that when nothing is connected with the cell, there is no external resistance connected with the cell only internal resistance of the cell is included.

In case of the terminal voltage total circuit is connected and there is external resistance included, so there will bbe loss of voltage in the circuit, due to that is is less than the emf.
