There is an increased amount of chloroplast cells containing chlorophyll, in the upper surface of the leaf to trap more sunlight for the photosynthesis. Since the chlorophyll in the chloroplast imparts green colour to the epidermal cells, the upper surface appears to be greener than the lower surface.
