Why is the use of unleaded petrol recommended for motor vehicles equipped with catalytic converters?

Catalytic converters consist of expensive metals like platinum-palladium and rhodium serving as a catalyst. They reduce the emission of harmful gases from automobiles by converting hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water, nitric oxide to nitrogen and carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide. Use of unleaded petrol is however recommended as the lead in petrol causes inactivation of the catalyst.
