Question

Why is the wall of a dam made thicker near its bottom?

Open in App
Solution

  1. This is because, the pressure exerted by a liquid (water, here) increases with its depth.
  2. Thus, at greater depth, water in the dam will exert greater pressure on its wall.
  3. To counter such high pressure, the wall of the dam is made thicker near the bottom.
