Why is the war fought between 1914 and 1918 called the First World War?

Solution

Prior to 1914, the world has never seen a war at the scale of the great war(aka world war 1), this just started out to be a war between two nations, but then at that point every country had an ally and waging war against one led to waging war against another indirectly, and Austria-Hungary's war against Serbia, led to war of whole Europe as a result of chain reaction and there was USA who later entered the war and Japan in the far east too entered the war and eventually, super powers were fighting among themselves and for the colonies too and hence, it was named First World War.
