Question

Why is there a difference in the rate of breathing between aquatic organisms and terrestrial organisms? Explain.

Solution

The faster rate of breathing in aquatic animals:

  1. Aquatic organisms breathe more quickly than terrestrial organisms.
  2. This is because the amount of O2 in water is very small in comparison to the amount of O2 in air.
  3. As a result, aquatic organisms must breathe faster than terrestrial organisms in order to obtain more O2.
  4. Aquatic organisms, such as fish, obtain oxygen from the dissolved state of water.
  5. The amount of dissolved oxygen in water is much lower than the amount of oxygen present in the air.
  6. So aquatic animals breathe faster than terrestrial animals to meet the need for required amounts of oxygen.
