Question

Why is tin electroplated on iron to make cans used for storing food?

Open in App
Solution

Electroplating:

  1. Electroplating is the process of coating a metal onto other by the process of electrolysis.
  2. Tin is less reactive than iron so the food inside the can will not react with iron.
  3. Food does not come into contact with iron, and is thus protected against spoiling.

Hence, Tin is coated on iron to protect the food from reacting with iron as iron is more reactive than tin.
