Why is urethra called the urino-genital tube?

Structure and location of urethra:

  1. The urethra is a tubular structure that connects the urinary bladder to the exterior of the body.
  2. In case of females the urethra is shorter measuring about 2-3cmwhile in case of males, the urethra is longer being 20cmin length.
  3. In females it is present embedded in the walls of the vagina while in males it is present in the glans penis.

Function of urethra:

  1. It transports the urine collected in the urinary bladder and expels it out of the body.
  2. In case of males, the urethra is involved in the release of both urine and semen.

Hence, the urethra is known as the urino-genital tube as it expels both urine and semen in males.
