Question

Why is UV light used in the photoelectric effect?

Open in App
Solution

Explanation:

  1. Photoelectric effect: When the light of a particular frequency is focused on metal, it ejects an electron from the metal's surface
  2. For ejection of metal, the light should be of greater frequency than the threshold(minimum) frequency and it is different for different metals
  3. From the electromagnetic spectrum, we know that the wavelength of UV light is low.

  1. Wavelength and frequency are inversely proportional.

Therefore, UV light has more frequency which is suitable for use in photoelectric effect and that is why it is used.
