Why is water sprinkled on the roof of homes after a hot sunny day?

Solution

Water has a high latent heat of vaporization.
It requires a good amount of heat energy for the evaporation process.
The heat energy is taken from the surface with which it is in contact.
When water is sprinkled on roof top after summer, the heat energy for evaporation is absorbed from the roof top by water.
As a result the temperature of the roof top goes down resulting a cooling effect.
