Question

Why is water's surface tension so high?

Open in App
Solution

Surface tension:

  1. Surface tension is a property of a liquid's surface.
  2. Because of the cohesive structure of its molecules, surface tension allows it to resist an external force.

Water:

  1. The comparatively high molecular or strong cohesive connections that occur between its molecules give water, among other liquids, a high surface tension.
  2. Furthermore, hydrogen bonding allows water molecules to strongly stick together and resist stretching.
  3. At 20°C, it has a surface tension of about 72.8mNper meter.
