Question

Why is you can say that double displacement or double decomposition reaction is not the example of redox reaction?

Solution

1. In a redox reaction, one element is being oxidised while other is being reduced. For e.g:

C(s) + O2(g) CO2(g)
Oxidation state: 0 0 +4 -2

Thus C is oxidised from 0 to +4 while O is reduced from 0 to -2.

2. In a double displacement reaction, no oxidation or reduction takes place. Only the exchange of ions takes place.

AgNOā€‹3(aq) + NaCl(aq) ā€‹ AgCl(s) + NaNOā€‹3(aq)
