A zener diode is a semiconductor that exhibits the property to conduct current in either forward direction or reverse direction.
When the semiconductor device, in this case, a zener diode, is connected to the supply in opposite polarities, it is called reverse bias.
Since a reverse-biased zener Diode exhibits a controlled breakdown, it is used mostly in reverse-biased conditions. It can also act as a voltage stabilizer in this condition.
These diodes are reverse-biased only because they conduct a constant amount of current until the reverse voltage attains a value that is equal to the breakdown voltage.
At the breakdown voltage, the diodes show two types of breakdowns: Avalanche Breakdown and Zener Breakdown.
