Why is zinc not extracted from zinc oxide through reduction using CO?
△G∘ for the conversion of Zn into ZnO is - 650 KJ and for the conversion of CO into CO2 is - 250 KJ i.e. ,
2Zn+O2⟶2ZnO △G∘=−650KJ2CO+O2⟶2CO2 △G∘=−450KJ
For the reaction 2ZnO+2CO⟶2Zn+2CO2 △G∘=+200KJ positive value of △G∘ shown that the reaction is not feasible.
That's why CO cannot be used for the reduction of ZnO into Zn by Considering the Ellingham diagram.
