why it is neccesaryto produce large no. of sperms and eggs by animals which reproduce by external fertilization.

External fertilisation occurs in water. So most of the eggs and sperms are washed away by water, so number of eggs and sperms produced should be large in number to form more offsprings. Sometimes gametes are also destroyed due to bad weather conditions.
