Question

why IUPAC name of propyl alcohol is 2-propanol not propanol

Open in App
Solution

It is given that the general name is propyl alcohol. The IUPAC name corresponding to propyl alcohol
(CH3-CH2-CH2-OH) is 1-propanol. Here 1 represents the position of carbon in the alkyl chain where OH is attached. We are giving the position of OH only if the alternate position will give some different compound. So we are not mentioning 1-ethanol because there is no compound like 2-ethanol.
