Question

Why lightning causes nitrogen fixation?

Open in App
Solution

Nitrogen fixation

The process of converting atmospheric nitrogen (N2) to ammonia (NH3) under the combined influence of biological and chemical processes is known as biological nitrogen fixation (BNF).

Lightning causes nitrogen fixation

  1. Each lightning strike carries electrical energy.
  2. The strong bonds in the nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere can be broken by it since it is so strong.
  3. Lightning, therefore, adds nitrogen to the soil by dissolving nitrates during precipitation.
  4. In turn, this benefits plants.
  5. However, the majority of the nitrogen fixation is carried out by soil-based bacteria.
