Question

Why lithium has the highest reducing nature in aqueous solution wherease normally in air it has lowest reducing nature?

Open in App
Solution

In aqueous solution, lithium form lithium ions. In aqueous solution, lithium has highest reducing nature. This is probably due to high hydration energy of small lithium ion, which compensates for high ionization energy. While in gas phase, lithium is not present in ions. So has lowest reducing nature.
