Question

why lithium is not stored in hydrocarbons and organic solvents but other alkali metals does?

Open in App
Solution

Various reasons for this activity is
  • On exposure to moist air all alkali metal tarnish rapidly so they are kept in kerosene. Exception to this is Lithium.
  • Lithium due to its light density it floats on the surface. so it is wrapped in paraffin wax.
  • Due to high polarising power, covalent character of lithium and its compounds increases, which is responsible for their solubility in organic solvents
