Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for detoxification of xenobiotic (foreign) substances and liver is the major organ responsible for conversion of toxic substances into non-toxic forms like conversion of ammonia to urea which gets excreted in the urine. This is why liver cell contains large amount of ER.
