Question

Why magnesium when react with nitric acid evolve hydrogen gas but some metal do not?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Metals react with acids to form metal salts and release hydrogen gas but not with dilute nitric acid. this is because HNO3 is a strong oxidizing agent. It oxidises the hydrogen to form water and itself gets reduced to an oxide of nitrogen such as NO, NO2, etc. magnesium and manganese are the only two metals that react with HNO3 to release hydrogen gas
