Why mars is known as red planet?

Open in App
Solution

Mars - the red planet. Mars is often calledthe 'Red Planet' because it appears in the sky as an orange-red star. The colour caused the ancient Greeks and Romans to name it after their god of war. Today, thanks to visiting spacecraft, we know that the planet's appearance is due to rust in the Martian rocks.

history seemed to relate a red color of Mars with something evil or bad. Ancient Egyptians called it ‘Har decher’ which means ‘red one’. The Greeks and Romans used the reddish color to name the planet after their God of War: “Mars”
