Question

Why melting point of wax is less than iron

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

The melting point of a compound depends on the force of attraction among its molecules. Strong intermolecular interactions between the molecules give rise to high melting point.
  • Wax are a type of molecular crystals, in which the constituent particles are molecules. These molecules have very weak force of attraction between the particle called Van der Wall’s force of attraction, hence it has very low melting point.
  • Iron is a metallic compound and have metallic bonding that is more stronger than Van der wall forces hence have high melting point.
