Why Metallic Hydrides are also known as Interstitial Hydride?

Metallic hydrides are called as interstitial hydrides because earlier it was thought that in these hydrides, hydrogen occupy interstitial positions in the metal lattices producing distortion but no change in its category of lattice.Therefore, they were named as interstitial hydrides.
