Why Neanderthal man and modern man belong to two distinct species?

Both belonged to the same species but due to evolution, the Neanderthals were evolved into modern human or homo sapiens which is now a different species. There is a lot of difference in the DNA as well because of which modern humans and Neanderthals cannot interbreed.
