Why nitrogen does not back bond with chlorine

Dear Student,
It is not true that Nitrogen does not back bond with chlorine. NCl₃ has back bonding. Lone pair of electron in nitrogen is donated to vacant 3d orbitals of Cl and it forms a back bond. Necessary condition for back bonding is presence of vacant orbitals and comparable size of the atoms bonding.
