Question

Why nitrogen does not back bond with chlorine

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
It is not true that Nitrogen does not back bond with chlorine. NCl3 has back bonding. Lone pair of electron in nitrogen is donated to vacant 3d orbitals of Cl and it forms a back bond. Necessary condition for back bonding is presence of vacant orbitals and comparable size of the atoms bonding.
