Question

Why non-metals are called insulators?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Definition of non-metals: The elements which form negative ions by gaining or accepting electrons are called non-metals.
  2. Insulator does not conduct electricity. For electrical valance, shell matter the most. Less number of electrons in valance shell which means more conductive. More number of electrons in valance shell means less conduct.
  3. Non-metals have more than 4 electrons in their valence shell.
  4. So, non-metals mostly do not conduct electricity for this they are called Insulators.
  5. For example, Sulphur(S) and PhosphorousP are not non-metals that do not conduct electricity.
