The northern plains are densely populated because these plains can support a very high population. These plains are very fertile and can grow a lot of food crops. Water is available in plenty in these plains. These plains also have very flat terrain. For these regions, the northern plains are densely populated.
The four regions of the northern plains are
1. The Rajasthan plains: Located in Rajasthan west of the Aravallis, these plains are drained by a number of small and seasonal rivers. These plains do not receive much rainfall and is not very densely populated.
2. The Punjab-Haryana plains: These plains are in Punjab and Haryana and are drained by the Satluj, Beas and Ravi rivers. They are highly fertile and are among the agriculturally most productive region in India.
3. The Ganga plain: These plains cover Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. They are drained by the Ganga and its tributaries. These are the largest plains of the northern plains and support the most population.
4. The Brahmaputra plain; These plains cover Assam and is drained by the Brahmaputra. They are also very fertile.
