Question

why only S8 crown structure can be made rather than S2 even in S2 the covelent bounding is complete so why do sulphur has to make S8 structure only If so then why cant Oxygen Form O8 both sulphur and oxygens valeny is 2! then why is there difference in their structure??

Solution

1. The crown structure of S8 is due to the single bonds between S-S.

2. This is because:

(a) The 3p-3p single bonds are very stable and strong bonds, but 3p-3p pi bonds are not stable and breakdown easily. Thus, all S form single bonds.

(b) Secondly, S8 is made of 8 S atoms , which is the most stable ring. A ring having atoms is very much stable.

3. Oxygen cannot form O8 because:

(a) It forms very stable 2p-2p pi bonds.

(b) It has very small atom and 8 small atoms together will have large electronic repulsion and ring will break.
