Question

Why PCl5 is more covalent than PCl3?

Open in App
Solution

Greater is the positive oxidation state of the central metal atom, greater is the polarizing power and thus higher is the covalent character of the bond formed between the central atom and the surrounding atoms.
  1. In PCl5 , clearly P is in its +5 Oxidation state whereas in PCl3 P is in +3 Oxidation state. Hence PCl5 is more covalent than PCl3
