Question

Why RBCs are absent in cockroaches?

Open in App
Solution

RBCs:

  1. Red blood corpuscles are the biconcave-shaped cells that transport oxygen through the blood.
  2. These are able to transport oxygen because of the presence of a red-colored iron pigment i.e hemoglobin present in them.
  3. The reb blood cells are red because of the presence of this pigment only.

RBCS are absent in cockroaches because:

  1. They have a tracheal intercom which is a network of multiple branches of the trachea in the body.
  2. These transport oxygen directly to each cell of the body.
  3. Therefore, they do not require hemoglobin for the transport of oxygen.
  4. This is the reason that cockroaches lack RBCs.
