Question

Why Rutherford choose a gold foil for his experiment? What would have happened if he choose another metal?

Open in App
Solution

Rutherford used gold for his scattering experiment because gold is the most malleable metal and he wanted the thinnest layer of metal. The gold sheet used was around 1000 atoms thick. Therefore, Rutherford selected a gold foil in his alpha scattering experiment. If he used some other metal then the results would not have been very accurate.
