Question

Why should acid be added to water and not water to acid ?

Open in App
Solution

The solution is as follows:

When we mix acid and water, it is an exothermic reaction, that is heat is evolved in this reaction. So, when water is added to acid, due to rise in temperature particles will gain kinetic energy and there is a chance acid may splash out and cause burns. So, we add acid to water.
