Question

Why Should Amino Acids Be Deaminated?

Open in App
Solution

Amino acids:

  1. Amino acids are organic compounds that consist of amino and carboxylate functional groups and also a side chain particular to each amino acid.
  2. Amino acids polymerize to form proteins.
  3. The human body uses amino acids to produce proteins required for the growth and repair of the body.

Deamination of amino acids:

  1. Deamination is the process of removal of an amine group from a molecule
  2. In the human body, it occurs in the liver.
  3. The amino group is removed from the amino acid and converted to ammonia.
  4. Amino acids should be deaminated because the body can not store amino acids or proteins, therefore it breaks amino acids and either used them as energy or stores them as carbohydrates or fats, after eliminating the amino group.
